Devotion for December 11
“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
If we feel that the weight of the whole world is on our shoulders, there is a way to get some relief. There are plenty of alternative methods, but none of these methods are lasting and some will actually cause harm. For example, peer pressure can cause many folks (and particularly young people) to “escape” using alcohol or other drugs. This is only temporary and obvious risks are involved.
There are other practices and religions claiming a relief or escape from the stresses of the world which do not seem unhealthy, but I greatly question where the emphasis lies. Is it honoring a false god or putting emphasis on self, giving us too much pride? Chances are that we are going down the wrong path if these are the things we choose.
Jesus offers us a simple, viable, and lasting solution. Seek the Lord and his refuge. Pray to our God, our Creator, who offers us what we all need.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being the one who can give us true refuge. We know that there is nothing that can compare to you. We pray for those around us who need you, because we all need relief. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
